The Associated Press: March 2008 – October 2012

I reported and took photo for breaking news and enterprise stories targeted at statewide and national audiences. I was recruited for the AP’s national reporting team on education in 2009 and also covered statewide and national politics. The enterprise stories I developed on subjects such as weed dating and a young girl’s cancer fight were highlighted by national news outlets including CNN and NPR. I was recognized in 2011 for my breaking news coverage of a college student’s murder, winning the AP’s weekly Best of the States contest. Ruralite Magazine: December 2011 – March 2012
Forest Grove, Ore.
As a freelance writer for Ruralite Magazine, which reaches more than 300,000 homes in the Pacific Northwest, I developed 1,200-word enterprise stories about an Idaho museum dedicated to cleaning supplies and a rural pilot who delivered mail to people living in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness.

The Poynter Institute:  June 2007

I briefly joined the team of faculty and industry professionals who teach a summer writing and reporting fellowship for recent college graduates at The Poynter Institute. I taught a session focused on how to generate story ideas.

Naples Daily News: August 2005-July 2007
Naples, Fla.
I reported daily on higher education and local communities on southwest Florida’s gulf coast, often breaking news in this fast-paced and competitive news environment. I participated in multimedia, audio, online reporting, and worked with video journalists to prepare broadcast stories. I also completed award-winning projects about hurricane survivors living in “Fema City” and the plight of undocumented students who find themselves unable to go to college.

The Poynter Institute: June 2005-July 2005

During a summer writing fellowship at The Poynter Institute, I wrote stories for an online publication and attended seminars taught by top professionals in the industry, with in-depth sessions on writing and reporting ethics.

Scripps Howard Foundation:January 2005-April 2005
Washington, D.C
I was among a small handful of students selected for this internship at the Scripps Howard Foundation news wire service in Washington, D.C. I reported daily on breaking news, congressional hearings, health and travel news from the nation’s capital and also pitched region-specific stories to various newspapers, which then published my work.

Lewiston Morning Tribune: June 2004-August 2004
Lewiston, Idaho
During an internship at this family-owned newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, I reported daily on communities spanning across five counties in northern Idaho and eastern Washington. I completed enterprise stories about people retracing Lewis and Clark’s 1800 trail and moonshine-era laws governing booze sales.
